Household Recycling Tips

At URM, we are conscious of reducing our carbon footprint and we want to make it easy for you to reduce yours too with these household recycling tips.

Remember... every little bit counts!

Benefits of Household Recycling

Australians produce about 50 million tonnes of rubbish each year. That’s more than 2 tonnes per person on average!

We’re pretty good at recycling (around 51% of waste is recycled), but a lot of household waste still goes to landfill, where it creates nasty greenhouse gases.

Household recycling is one of the easiest ways to divert waste from landfill and it reduces:

  • Greenhouse gases.
  • Water and air pollution.
  • Landfill costs.
  • The amount of virgin materials needed for new products.
  • Resources and energy to create new products.

The 5 Rs of Rubbish

To make the biggest difference, there are a few steps you can take before recycling.

These are known as the 5 Rs:

  1. REFUSE what you don't need (avoid creating waste in the first place).
  1. REDUCE the amount you buy.
  1. REUSE or repurpose what you have.
  1. ROT your organic waste by composting.
  1. RECYCLE the rest responsibly by segregating your waste.
